Buying a New England B&B
Once when my husband and I were staying at a New England bed and breakfast, we saw a neighboring B&B for sale. For a short while we tossed around the idea of buying it. It was in a cute little town that was a big tourist attraction on and off throughout the year — known for its antique shows, it had a lot of quaint little bed and breakfasts.
I think it would be such a charming life — me continuing to pursue my career as a freelance writer, of course, but my husband and I running a Massachusetts bed and breakfast as well. I’d let my husband do the cooking, because he’s an excellent cook, and I would decorate and maintain the rooms. I love antiques and I think I would be good at decorating a Boston or Rhode Island bed and breakfast to fit the historical atmosphere in New England.
Of course, pretty quickly we came to our senses and realized it could never happen. For one thing, my husband needs his full time job, for the health benefits if not the income — I am a type 1 diabetic, so we can’t just go out and buy our own health insurance. We have to get it from an employer group plan.
Oh well. It was a nice dream. I guess we’ll just have to satisfy ourselves with staying at the B&Bs, instead of owning one!
