Entrepreneurs Should Diversify
If you are an entrepreneur, it’s important to never keep all your eggs in one basket. By this I mean that you need to have more than one client, and often more than one business venture, to protect yourself from slow periods as much as possible.
For example, I was pretty much self-employed for my last two years of college, when I babysat for wealthy families instead of working a “normal” job. After I graduated and started working, first as a technical writer and then as a freelance writer, I continued babysitting (albeit less often) for these families.
Today this helps me in a couple of ways. One, I typically have more demand for my services as a babysitter exactly when I have less demand for my services as a writer (i.e. around the holidays). Two, if anything ever happens to put a damper on my career as a writer, I can always pick up more babysitting or even nanny part or full time.
Of course, the other reason why I have continued babysitting is because I enjoy it. I have watched some of these kids grow up, and I love being around them. For instance, I get to see them do things like get excited about their Halloween costumes. This past year, I helped their mom shop for mermaid costumes for her daughter and Star Wars costumes for her two boys.
The babysitting definitely has some financial and professional advantages — it’s just a bonus that it’s fun for me, too!
