Dormant living
I went to visit my friend in Eilat, Israel, a southern city that lies on the coast of the Red Sea. In many respects, it is like most Israeli cities, except most of the property close to the beach is taken up by either hotels or condo complexes geared toward foreign buyers.
This has led to what I like to call the French epidemic. From what I gathered, rich French families have bought up all these stylish and extravagant condos. They live in them a few months out of the year while they are on holiday, and let them lie dormant for the rest of the year.
It is really an exercise in excess. These are not simple houses on the beach. The condos are new, modern and just a bit over the top. There are 10 hot tubs on the roof, and not some portable spa-type model from a Discount Hot Tubs store, but built-in, lined with wood, a gazebo roof overhead and on the roof.
I mean, my friend has a nice two-bedroom place in the hills there with a great view, but we’re talking about luxury homes practically on the beach, and they just leave them empty most of the year.
We don’t even have the option of portable spas; maybe we could get a kiddie pool up there if we are lucky one day.
