Trying deep breathing

breathing exerciseWhen a friend suggested that I try deep breathing to help reduce the level of stress I was feeling daily, I thought she must have been joking. I mean, I breathe all the time, right?  How was taking deeper breaths going to help me with the amount of stress I was feeling due to a recent divorce that I was still struggling to deal with?

She promised me that if I just gave it a shot, I would be pleasantly surprised.  I agreed to at least keep my mind open and try it.  After all, what did I have to lose?  Since I basically had no idea what to do, she started me off with a simple breathing exercise that I could do whenever I wanted to.  She suggested I try it before I went to bed to help me relax and sleep better than I had been.  

So that night when I went to bed I did some deep breathing, relaxing my muscles each time I exhaled.   I was asleep within five minutes.  I repeated the exercise in the morning when I woke up and for the first time in weeks I started the day completely calm and relaxed.
