Buying Things You Don’t Know Much About

shoppingOne of the toughest things about shopping for someone else is that you often end up trying to buy products that you don’t really know anything about. A great example of this was when I recently tried to purchase a security earpiece for a nephew of mine. I know that I was in trouble as soon as the salesperson asked me whether I needed to look at earpieces for Comet series headsets or for Commander series headsets.

I ended up deciding that I would just skip the whole process of trying to make this gift a surprise and instead go the route of making a special day out of it for my nephew. I took him out for the day and we got lunch and saw a movie. After that I took him shopping for the earpiece and had him explain what was what to me before we bought what he needed. We bonded and he got what he wanted.

This isn’t always an option when shopping for people (especially when shopping for other adults). Sometimes you need to go the gift card route and other times you need to just make an educated guess about which item to buy. Consider it a learning experience!
